When Is Mothers Day In America

It Takes mothers (Village) to save our planet
We've all been told that the mother knows best. Lorena Aguilar Revelo is the perfect example of an activist and leader based on her parenting skills. She was born in San Jose? Costa Rica, and is an anthropologist with a specialization in cultural ecology. After a decade of intensive research on the ground in rural areas of Central America, Lorena has been recognized as an international messenger for a new way of working with communities. Its mission is to demonstrate that real popular participation, especially by women, is a vital step in achieving sustainable development worldwide. Help policy makers and technicians understand that projects and conservation efforts must be developed, implemented and evaluated by the local population real progress.
His colleagues told me that beyond the many accomplishments of Lorraine, mother of three children is greatly appreciated by his personal style and warmth. Lorraine shared that, in his dual role as mother and lawyer, who has learned other ways of exercising power, the value of different methods of negotiation, and also the importance of a smile. I saw these qualities about following the meeting with her, with her husband and son in a resort town in Costa Rica. Lorraine genuine concern for others (it was late for our interview because they stopped on the highway to take a few German tourists lost) and his infectious laughter made me feel at home. Our first meeting was more While meeting with an old friend.
When I asked Lorraine what led to their field of work, she told me she was a child, his father was a plantation Coffee and demanded to pick coffee beans to make money. In the fields, he met many people who have no shoes, or even houses. He wondered about the difference with their own situation and began to understand that not everyone the same opportunities in life. He saw these people were friendly and hardworking, but have had little opportunity to improve their life because they lack the assets to better education and access to credit.
When Lorraine got pregnant with her first child, she realized that work in rural development because the mothers have wanted to have the options you have to raise their children in a safe environment. "My life has been good, so I'm doing this because I want that moms have to have the happiness that I had raised my own children, "she said.
Through their work with the World Conservation Union, Lorena seen many projects of poverty in the world can not meet requirements, as it puts money into the wrong pockets. She recalls: "When I worked with women in El Salvador, whenever they had an income of their activities, have always been so proud to declare: "I'll put my kids to school." Never heard mothers say, 'I will buy a new piece of land or I build my house three times. No, they put their children to school. "Points Lorraine studies that have taken place in Latin America, Asia and Africa show that when the same amount of money going to women 75 to 95% of resources are invested in improving the quality of living for their families. "Mothers are always thinking of their first child, in general, and the world. I have never known a mother, well, some of them, that it does not at the forefront of the agenda, he explained.
Lorena says his biggest challenge is the environmental sector does not recognize the woman, even if women continue to be used in several ways. For example, recycling campaigns: women managing and operating in most rural communities. However, when programs and policies recycling have been developed, women are often absent during the process. Lorena knows that women play a vital role in managing natural resources if its main task of the World Conservation Union is to convince the authorities of the importance of participation of women in policy development and at the same time help women in developing countries acquire the skills of promotion and access to resources that improve their living conditions.
To achieve this goal, Lorena is the mobilization of women and mothers in Costa Rica and the world to use their voice and become part of the environment. She works with thousands of women in the organization community through friendships and most of the primary networks. "We work with local women, thus their right to speak, teaching them to speak and not be afraid to speak. The key is, do not speak for them, that speak of the needs of their families and children, "she said. Lorraine says:" When you help to speak at first very difficult. Many of them are damn afraid to speak or talk. Then break the ice and become very, very powerful woman with their voices. Later, you can not stop! And speaking not lose anything. You lose more by keeping silent. "
Lorraine tells me that through his life, mothers have touched many ways and have learned that life takes what they have to fight for it and do their best. "If women can walk for eight hours every day to bring home a bucket of dirty water, how complain that we do not? I not long enough? I have to run their work for so and so? No, can not complain about these things with my new configuration in life, "she said. Lorraine believes that has changed is the gross value of women worldwide.
I asked Lorraine to share their tips for busy moms who feel overwhelmed for her sense of domestic responsibilities, still want to contribute more to the world outside her home. "One thing I would say that those who are preparing to make a difference is that, as a mother, has an enormous amount of activity you participate in society. You do not have to be out of the house to be seen. I think the mothers should understand that work, he says emphatically. She thinks it's funny, but sad when she asked women in rural areas who are working mothers of 11 children, to do everything at home, and say, "No, I do not work. I can help my husband." How many hours? "Eight hours. He needs help." This reminds me How many hours of placing women's work in maintaining our company at home. "If someone had to pay for it, most families with resources are not sufficient to pay for childcare, washing, cooking, cleaning, driving to schools and doctors, and the rest. Even if not in the public domain There are many things that women do, "says Lorraine. We discuss the way most companies do not give the true value of the work of motherhood.
Lorraine also believes someone Reaching a mother makes life easier and more rewarding - to find the time. "Finding the time to do things like recycling, plant a tree, playing in the grass with her children, bicycling - but stop complaining about how much he has to do. It is useless to complain. I stopped several years ago because I realized what it is, I have no choice. I'd better get used to it, have fun and try to maximize it. If life gives you lemons, make lemonade or a daisy! "Squeaks Lorraine.
When I asked how she does it all, Lorraine gives much credit to her husband, Eric. "I know that Eric has been a key element because we are a functioning unit. Share the responsibility of parents, where possible, is the best way for families to flourish. "He said. She is grateful that Eric is teaching his son Sergio things can be different from the housework is not a women's issue, that being funny is not just sweet a women's issue, it is right that men are like that. Is balance. "
Lorraine tells me that the force behind his efforts for the environment is their children and grandchildren. "You must think ahead and act, as it does not end when you die. By leaving a legacy and want a better life to come. Do not want my grandfather's son said, "Why are - forests destroyed, why not make something of your generation? At least I can look and say I did, I tried."
