Today we celebrate George Gershwin's 111 (26 Sept 1898)!
Aside from the ultra well known pieces (Rhapsody in Blue, American In Paris, Porgy & Bess the three Preludes) what music comes to mind when you think of George?

Piano Concerto in F
All those songs, too numerous to mention.
Lullaby, for string quartet; later arranged for string orchestra (&via TeslaG I now know also for piano.) The one piece he composed during his very brief study of theory and composition.
I have only heard of the Second Rhapsody, (for piano and orchestra ED ADD: ah..the internet, I had read he toyed with the notion of calling it....(a Rhapsody in Rivets!) but I stand corrected! I'm told it is a worthwhile piece.
Non-musical:
Gershwin taught himself to play the piano by sitting at a player piano and putting his fingers down where the keys were depressed!
He studied composition only briefly, and from that we have the very pleasant 'Lullaby.'
In Southern California, Gershwin became friends with Arnold Schoenberg, and they both enjoyed playing tennis. The juxtaposition of these two great and disparate musicians, imaged in tennis shorts on the court and playing several sets delights me.
I'm making CDs for my friends birthdays all coming up, any ideas for good songs about getting older? So far I have Forever Young, It's my party, When I'm 64, and Glory Days. Any other ideas? Thanks!
