I was thinking of bringing some gifts to a nursing home for XMAS, but when someone suggested some of the above items I was baffled. Don't they have things like this?? Is it not standard?

it is true...at least it was on Long island in NY when I worked in one...most of the time if the nurses aid cared at all about her "residents" they could ask him/her to buy them something they needed with their alloted money(if they even had any). A lot of residents depend on donations of clothes and such. I was so appalled at how people were treated in the nursing home that I had to quit...the pay was very good and so were the benefits but I couldn't bear to see what was going on. You would think they would get personal hygiene items like you would in a hospital right...especially because the nursing home is getting BIG bucks for their care....so sad. I think your idea is wonderful but just remember deodorants,perfumes and powders can cause a problem also...the aides that are supposed to bed bathe the resident each day can cheat and give them a spray down to make the resident smell better rather than actually cleaning them....nursing homes are horrors..I could go on and on but will stop here.
